The only Pokemon that dies is Charmander, and thats only because his weak point is his tail flame.
Then again, I fail to see how razor sharp leaves, flamethrowers, rock tackles, solar beams (I like to call it "insta-cancer" beam) energy blasts of all sorts, ice storms, thunderstorms, fire storms, rock slides, earthquakes, poisonous sludges and gasses, and generally getting hit by a tackle from any Pokemon that weighs more than 400 pounds or is five to ten stories high are all somehow NON-LETHAL.
Well that explains why they want your pokemon to get hurt.

Trade? IDK I got my friend who beat Diamond (and transfered his guys over to Pal Park) to give me a charmander right off the bat. I had a Piplup AND a Charmander in my Diamond version early on. You can guess which of those became my epic party leader. I KILLED THEM WITH FYAR!!!
