"Rarity's Tears" is dumb. And stupid. And it's stupid. And it's dumb.
Okay here's what they did wrong:
NUMBER 3: PONYVILLE AND THE RPG!
*sigh* Ponyville was dumb and boring and had nothing to do with hitting things with your whip.
So this game added RPG elements where you had to buy apples from a store. Frends that you converted from enemies instead of being your companion throughout the game which was the bomb by the way, instead are proxies to learn life lessons and other neccesary elements to get through the game. SO INSTANTLY THIS BECOMES FRIENDSHIP AND INSTANTLY THIS BECOMES POINTLESS AND DUMB.
(These kind of things are meant to elongate a game. They are made to manipulate you to think you are making more friends than you are actually making)
WHAT HUH? UH-WHAT? There's an element in a game that isn't soley for me to have friends? Ooooh noo… That's- nooo-
Lemme ask you something.
What's the difference between:
A) Befriending a bunch of ponies to make friends out of them, and collecting the friends, then going back to town to get a life lesson, to get to another part of your life,
and
B)Befriending a bunch of ponies who are obstructing your path of life?
THE ANSWER IS 4 GENERATIONS!
See, this is the difference between My Little Castlevania 1 and 2. It becomes the source of all the game's short comings. Rarity's Tears is very manipulative.

MLC doesn't waste your time, and it gives you a goal to look foward to. A really true friendship that's exciting and interesting, and a rediculous difficulty level OH MY GOSH IT'S HARD. AHWAA LOOK IT'S BOSS -ERWG- WHAT DO I DO-

NUMBER 4: FRIENDS AND FORGIVENESS!
MLC's friendships were just straight up HARD, but Rarity's Tears dumbed down that difficulty. No cupcakes, just libraries.
These are the kind of analogies I love about video games.
MLC 1 is the cupcakes.
MLC 2 is the libraries.

In MLC mysterious baked dungeon wall cupcakes made friends for you.
In MLC 2 it's the libraries that made friends for you.
In MLC 1 if you needed friends you were SCREWED!
Unless you got lucky or you knew where all the cupcakes are hidden. In the walls.
In MLC 2 if you were Man(?) enough to make it back to Ponyville you could hit up the libraries and get all your friends back.
But if you lost any, you just kinda got back what you lost.
Okay. Well whatever. BUT HEY!
If you lose all your friends, you just have to continue, which still spawns you back where you were, but you lost all your friends. So if you need to learn a lesson, you had to make more friends out of enemies and WASTE MORE OF YOUR TIME! And having to walk a bazillion miles away to the town to get your health back is a WAST OF YOUR TIME! I hope you know where I'm coming from so I don't have to WASTE ALL MY TIME EXPLAINING IT!
Either of these things could have been fixed my implementing truces or even keeping the wall cupcakes around, I dunno.
The point is they're wasting your time for no reason.

NUMBER 5 *ACOUGH*… THE PALETTE!
I don't know about you but the first time I started up Rarity's Tears is how boring Rarity looked. Makes me wanna… makes me wanna fall asleep…
WOAH LOOK AT THAT ORANGE!
In MLC 1 Rarity just popped out. But all of the level palette incorporated orange in some way, but it also included some blue, which is by the way orange's complement.
It makes everything just pop in general and the game felt alive.
In Rarity's tears, Rarity just got this dull black outline with a red tunic.
SNOORE!
Stages included really dull, washed over color combonations and really admenting splices of color and small details like MLC 1 did.
*GAAASP*
To it's credit, Rarity's Tears incorperated a lot of green, which is red's complement, But it was mostly muddy, and kinda stayed in this safe dark palette, and never deviated too far into the brighter shades, like MLC dared to do. Overall it felt boring, and it felt it had no soul, or character. All the levels just kinda blend together in one, dark grey mess. Which kind reflects the entire game really- WHOOPS DID I JUST SAY THAT OUT LOUD?
Ponyville was about the worst example of this. The entire town was just one flat, uninteresting color. Go inside, *its all blue*. Go outside ITS SOO RED. Night comes IT'S ALL DARK BLUE. I know the PES has limited colors, but come on. At least give me some contrasting colors.
GIMME SOMETHING INTERESTING TO LOOK AT!
NUMBER 6: STUPID FRIENDS AND ENEMIES!
So as I mentioned before, MLC 1 had genius friend placement, and it was wicked memorable, and it gave you a sense that the game was thought OUT. It was just so HARD. Okay so it was all possible, and it wasn't like the relationships were awkward, you just had to strategize your tact and your bonding time but OH MAN IT WAS HARD IT'S SO FREAKING HARD!
…Okay I'm done. I spent wayy more time than I needed too on this. I'm taking a break.

In one episode Derpy Hooves, back when the animators only considered her a background extra, just had her say "muffins" in response to Pinkie Pie and Applejack giving out muffin samples. (Which the ponies of Ponyville didn't know were actually nasty; made of potato chips, soda, lemons, and worms.)
Then the bronies, who are hard-wired to turn any small phrase into an endlessly repeatable in-joke, picked up on this. She was already Derpy at this point so from that point on it was assumed that she had an obsession or continued craving for muffins. That's why in some art you would see her posing with a muffin.
In the case of this picture, which I managed to force onto Halolz apparently, it's just another case of a totally different meme (Ancient Aliens) being ponified. But instead of Mr. Wacky Doodle Hairdo Man saying "aliens", as to claim that an unexplainable phenomenon or weird logic is the result of extraterrestrials, Derpy claims it is the result of "muffins."
