I agree that Minish Cap is not between SS and OOT but as for it's final placement, I'm not sure where it would be. Sometime after Spirit Tracks does seem to be the most likely but…..actually, I'll leave it there since I could go on for hours on the timeline.

If Skyward Sword was the start of the timeline, why was it needed to piece together all the rest?

Minish cap is the first of the four swords trilogy. According to Eiji Aonuma, a man who has worked on the series since Ocarina of Time, it was intended to be the first. (This was said before Skyward Sword) However because of the many ties it has to A Link to the Past, some aspects of the games that follow the wind waker story as well as being a prequel to four swords creates a very hard place to set it.
My opinion is that the tale of the four sword happens to be either after the wind waker due to the master swords absence (which is currently lodged in a certain someone's head) and anything before the creation or knowledge of the Master Sword would make Hyrule a very different place. Or that the 4 sword trilogy cannot even be place in the timeline due to it being way to obscure with the details in game. But just my opinion. I believe the minish cap to be the haziest of the timeline. It can fit anywhere and nowhere.
It is a generally accepted theory among my friends that most if not all the events of DBZ as experienced by the Z fighters were started or at least affected by Piccolo because of accidentally telling Vegeta and Nappa about the dragonballs. So many things would have turned out differently.

Actually, it was revealed in the cutscene after Zelda fell off her bird into the tornado, when he was explaining what had happened to Headmaster Gaepora, that Link uses sign language. Furthermore, it was revealed when he snuck in to Zelda's room that Zelda loves Tingle more.

I always thought Wind Waker was quite a ways later, considering Hyrule has sunk into an ocean that never seems to be mentioned at any other time. Also, it's obviously hinted at that the Koroks were originally Kokiri who evolved into the wood nymph like Koroks in Wind Waker.

I'm not sure which part you're referring to but I was talking about Minish Cap. Wind Waker is hundreds of years after. Probably in the adult timeline and yes the Koroks are most definitely the Kokiri. Also the Rito are the evolution of the Zora.

Nintendo, why did you try to make a realistic looking depiction of Miyamoto as a child on the N64? You shouldn't have done that.
Four Swords was said to be the earliest in the timeline when it was released, then Minish Cap was a prequel to that. Nothing has been said to refute it, so Minish Cap is (possibly) the most likely for the start of the timeline, so far anyway. As for Four Swords Adventures goes, that's a sequel to Four Swords, NOT a remake/reimagining. FSA also has elements that put it before ALTTP (how before is up to debate). Particularly of note is the Trident of Power that Ganon wields -- it shows up in ALTTP, LOZ, both Oracles, and Link's Awakening (sort of).
Case in point: Minish Cap is most likely still the earliest so far, but Four Swords Adventures can take place anywhere before Ganon starts using the Trident. In the case of hazy continuity, I just fall back on creator intent.
