It's a shortening of the name Teresa, but most women with that name don't use that shortening. I only know one, and that's my mom.

As a clarification, Terry is not typically a name by itself. It is a shortening of any name starting with a "Ter" sound, the most common being Terrence (a male name) and Teresa (a female one), hence the confusion.
