I think it's due to the fact that all the source games run off the source engine… which was originally made for half-life 2
I did that with the Elder Scrolls. Got the GoTY version of both Oblivion and Morrowind in a discount pack. Played Oblivion a lot, barely touched Morrowind.

In total, so far there were two reasons for me to update the DX9 legacy components in Win7:
1) Worms Reloaded on Steam (did it manually as mentioned on Team17 forum, just to be annoyed by Steam many times after to update my up-to-date DirectX and Visual C++ runtimes).
2) Quake 1, as in DirectQ (the code base of all other OpenGL ports is soooo 1997).
