Given that you need 72 gold ore and a red apple to make a golden apple, you're likely to find maybe one vein in 2 hours of mining with only 3 gold in it, and apples can only be found in dungeons and don't always appear even there… why the FUCK would you ever eat one?
You're supposed to just leave them in your inventory forever. Then fall in lava and lose them anyway.
