He was shielding the sun from his eyes, to protect the sun. In the last solar system, the sun saw his eyes. And we all know what happened next.

Yeah, when they were making the game, they wanted C. Falcon's helmet to break if it took alot of damage. Same with Meta Knight's mask. They even had textures that showed the helmet and mask cracking.
