    Ain't it so?

  2. FoxyMayo on May 7th, 2009 7:06 pm

So sad, yet so true… I miss the old Sonic…

(Still won't keep furries from 34-ing Sonic stuff, though… eugh…)

  3. NovaMan XP on May 7th, 2009 7:09 pm

    Sadly, this is true.

Last good ones were SA1 and 2 in my opinion. >_>

But the old Genesis games were the best.

I'm embarrassed to say I fell victim to that vicious cycle many times now…

*gets depressed and plays with Genesis*

Sonic won't stop lying to me. :(

    I sense a new meme…
and it's sad, really sad, to think sonic's Sega main franchise

  7. Meh on May 7th, 2009 7:39 pm

    Lovely. More hate bandwagon. *sigh*
Its rather sad how people keep jumping the "BAD SONIC GAME" wagon when.. they really aren't all that bad. Every game has its flaws, whether its sonic or not. Just looks like Sonic games have their flaws paraded about more than others. I dunno. I've not played ALL the new ones, but the ones I've played a few times weren't as bad as the media seems to say.
Is why I tend to refer to this as a bandwagon.
I'm just stating my opinions, so no need to go back at me, I've no intention to have offended anyone.

  8. TheAceOfSkulls on May 7th, 2009 8:01 pm

Well I have played the games and can say that the recent ones (which I never pay for, that's what gullible hopeful friends are for) are awful. Sonic is experimenting in gameplay that he shouldn't be in. He shouldn't even be in 3D. He worked better in 2D. He's still stuck on things that most other developers have grown out of (collect all these coins to advance the story, anyone?). Plus, if they've already tried the whole give a hedgehog a weapon before and it failed, why do it again?

This is my opinion that is not going back at yours, just latching onto it and providing an opposing view point.

  9. MasqueNoMercy on May 7th, 2009 8:06 pm

umm… did anyone read the game informer magazine that had the bioshock 2 information on it… in there is an interview from the head of the original sonic team… and when he left he told them that they need to kill off the sonic franchise so they can work on something else so they make barely playable games (and even said that the werehog idea doesnt even sound like a playable idea) but every time they make a bad game their plan is thwarted by fanboys who WILL NOT STOP BUYING SONIC GAMES… so until the periodic sonic cycle is broken by a time of no sonic games… there will never be a good sonic game… EVER

  10. FrEEz on May 7th, 2009 8:13 pm

Well yeah, sonic started sucking since the release of the PS2/Xbox. Every single sonic related game (Gameboy Advance not included, since all the games released on it were good -- probably has something to do with the fact that they're 2D, and very same old same old) released since has sucked. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the new sonic was going to suck, especially after i heard about the whole 'Werehog' thing. Don't get excited about a sonic game on a console anymore, it will definetely dissapoint. On the DS though it will be either okay or good.

  11. Foxee Roxee on May 7th, 2009 8:15 pm

Its funny cuz its true…and sad…It started going down with Sonic Heroes and died with Sonic Next Gen. But sadly I refuse to give up…

    we're damned?

It was the April addition, and it was in their "Game Infractor" which is their yearly April Fools joke section. Looks like they got you good.

  14. Meh on May 7th, 2009 8:28 pm

I don't mind an opposing view. ( I'm glad I got one that was well written out an thoughtful than the usual internet war. Thank you kindly for that. )
I'd think Sega didn't stay in the whole 2D thing because.. well.. most companies didn't. I did enjoy the first few 3D ones on the Dreamcast, (Wasn't too fond of the GC ports because they were just that, ports. To me it was a rather stalling time, since they didn't feel as much like 'new games' rather than just spiffed to be ported. ) I liked the first one better than the second, even though it was older.
You have a point there, the 2D Sonic games that came out more recently on the DS and even back on the Advance had a better reception than the recent 3D ones. I enjoyed the Rush ones, myself.
There are flaws in the games, most defiantly, as well as flops too. I couldn't play through all of Shadow's, I don't have the best standpoint of it, but I'd say I'd hope they not repeat that game again.
I've played a bit of Unleashed and the Sonic 06 game though, both on the 360. From what I saw there, even though I've yet to finish Unleashed all the way through yet, a fair lot of the problems that seemed to crop up in 06 (stepping away from plot standpoints, just looking at gameplay itself.) Seemed reduced, as to how far I got, I didn't run into any 'skidding gliches' or oddies. I saw in a lot of media reviews how people didn't like the slower angle of the "Werehog" bit. I didn't seem to mind that as much, since it tossed a bit more variety in. I dunno about the Quick response bits, since I've not quite gotten far enough in, but those would prolly be a tricky bit for me.
I just see on mainly overreacted negatives from media ( I read a game review on one, and I kid not, they complained about the sky being too blue. That was just a bit silly, I think.) , which spread to having the whole game downplayed as 'horrible' when, I can say, there's prolly a lot WORSE games out there than these.

Thank you again for the sensible comment. I've run across quite the internet uproar in the past from posting my opinions. Heh.

  15. MasqueNoMercy on May 7th, 2009 8:29 pm

… are you sure? it would make alot of sense if it were true…

  18. Ron-Falco on May 7th, 2009 8:34 pm

to be honest, I do realize that Sonic games have gone downhill in the past few years. HOWEVER, I do think that sonic's lack of success puts Sega at fault just as much as the Sonic fanboys. They should be smart enough to realize that the games are only selling BECAUSE of the diehard fanboys and the people willing to try it out in hopes of this being Sonic's big break. If they would take note of the reviews (which actually mean something), and the angry gamer letters, then maybe they could produce a decent Sonic game.

    Just my 2 cents

The new Sonic games are like movies based on games. Your hoping it'll be good but turn to be waste of money.

  21. AquaLink on May 7th, 2009 9:02 pm

it wouldn't be if they'd make a good game with him for once…

  22. AquaLink on May 7th, 2009 9:04 pm

actually, i thought sonic adventure 2 was good, though that was for the cube

  23. AquaLink on May 7th, 2009 9:21 pm

i don't feel as though going 3d was the problem. nintendo was able to turn mario into 3d multiple times (and then back to 2d again) and had no problems with that at all. i think the main problem was that sega tried to make sonic into something that was like everything else, when clearly he isn't. take, for example, the original sonic adventure.

now, i bought the GC version and didn't go through the entire game, so i don't have much to go on, but what i did notice was that there was a LOT of free roaming going on that i did not care for. the fact that i had to run to a mission that was undefined made me confused and upset. then, when i got there, a piece of storyline showed up and i had no idea what was going on because that part of the storyline connected with another character who i hadn't played yet. then i went and tried the Big the Cat stage and just gave up on the game altogether. it felt like this game tried to turn itself into a Mario 64 with multiple characters that attempted to set up a free roam area to find missions in. the only problem was that it didn't show where to go and it broke up the story between 5 or so other characters, making you have to play one character, stop, another character, stop, in order to get the story going the correct way.

i don't know, maybe it's just me or the fact that it was the GC version, but i didn't like that one.

now, if you look at sonic adventure 2, there was a decent 3d sonic game. it had a full storlyline element broken up into 3 parts which could be followed well enough, no real free roaming ability, and fun little mini games with chao (who are the prolly the coolest things i've ever seen). you didn't get confused, the story went in enough of a line, and you didn't have to stop and switch characters all the time to be able to follow what was going on.

it's not that he was turned into a 3d character that turned him into something bad, it was the lack of being able to create a fun story with a good game play aspect that made him fail all over the place. yes, it's creative to give him a sword or turn him into a werehog, but no one wants to see that. sonic team needs to buckle down, focus on their original storylines, and try to apply that to a 3 dimensional space, which they CAN do, they just haven't yet.

  24. yggdrasil325 on May 7th, 2009 9:33 pm

This is all too true… in the "more screens" box, it would be appropriate to add "Stupid gameplay gimmick unveiled." Swords, werehogs, etc…

  25. Paulrus on May 7th, 2009 9:39 pm

Poor Sonic. He's just the butt of jokes now.

    Like this one:

His fanporn has better quality than his current games. Boom.

  26. BlueChameleon on May 7th, 2009 9:41 pm

Less of a cycle, more of a depressing spiral…

  27. Sorin on May 7th, 2009 9:51 pm

i'm a diehard sonic fan myself, but even i will admit that this has been very true since after Sonic Adventure 2, and there have been some pretty crappy games lately… mostly all the ones with shadow in them (he's not the kind of character you can bring back from the dead without making it seem lame), and subsequently every other character introduced in Adventure 1 and 2. and they have been a little lax on gameplay (understatement)
sonic unleashed, though it had its flaws, i thought was the best 3D game, and that if they keep that up (w/out the crappy dual-world gameplay) and improve on it, then MAYBE Sonic games would actually get good.
but i agree with Ron-Falco's comment about Sega not being able to listen to reviews OR fans. and that is a BIG problem on their part. if they did a) we wouldn't have effing 4Kids voicing the games and b) the gameplay would be so much better. but lately, what companies have listened to fans (without ruining their own franchise's storylines)???

  28. Walker on May 7th, 2009 9:58 pm

I think that the recent games would be alright, if they stuck to the original working concepts. That is to say, I have Unleashed, and I really enjoyed the fast-paced, traditional-Sonic-turned-3D levels. But then the gimick comes in; night time. Now, I tried not to be biased here, and gave the levels a good few goes… But it got to the point where every time it was suddenly dark, and you see the furry monstrocity howl as he enters the room, I would just quit and do whatever other missions I possibly could. I won't go into a massive review of it, suffice to say that's just not something I enjoyed.
It's these latest gimicks that have been the downfall really. Like you said (and the submission itself points out) adding in the new elements and trying to turn the Sonic franchise into something that, basically, it just plain isn't, is a bad move. The original basis for the game is what sold it, and is what people want to come back to and experience in new ways better portrayed by newer technology -- I think if The Sonic Team want to branch out into other areas, they should stop using Sonic to do it. Grow a different branch, and try something entirely new. Get a puppy, don't force the old dog to learn new tricks via self-mutilation.

Aaaanyway, to be slightly on-topic, nice demonstration of the Sonic Cycle…

  29. sorin255 on May 7th, 2009 10:10 pm

    twas for the dreamcast first
and the dreamcast version was MUCH better than the cube version (with the exception of maybe chao raising)

  30. Paulrus on May 7th, 2009 10:13 pm

You saying that just gave me an idea.

  31. Zink120 on May 7th, 2009 6:18 pm

Wow, this (old) pic has evoked some long comments.
I just ordered Unleashed for £12 actually. No-one in their right mind would pay full price for it, surely?
I do think this whole hating-on-Sonic thing is a bit of a bandwagon though. Lots of people judge the games without playing them. I'm gonna play it before I judge it -- it may yet turn out to be awful, it may be alright. :-)

That's how I've been feeling… And if it means anything, there's been a NES in my house since before I was even born. Not to mention how I generally only buy Nintendo systems at launch.

I don't understand the sudden push to be "everyone's" company… but then again, that's just it. They're a company, and in the end, profit comes first. I guess it's my own fault for thinking they actually cared about us. :(

And before anyone gets pissed, I DID enjoy some of the new games actually made by Nintendo. Quite a few, actually, but I just feel Nintendo's lost who they once were.

  37. Someguy5031 on May 7th, 2009 11:44 pm

This wouldn't be bad if they just kept Sonic in his own element: 2d Fast Paced Platforming!

Not stupid spinoffs involving Air-boards or Swordplay!

well spoken, and yea theres good games on the (my favorite being hotd:overkill) but just not as many as there should be. im sad i didnt invest in a 360 instead =/

  40. celark on May 8th, 2009 12:02 am

Yeah Sonic Adventure 2 was really good, I played the Gamecube version and was suprised. Reviews were pretty harsh on it.

  41. 1qqqq1 on May 8th, 2009 12:17 am

Wow. This post has created quite a lot of deep, insightful comments on Sonic's current state of affairs. All of these points are true, Sonic games are in a serious decline due to a transition from 2-D to 3-D and the addition of repetitive plots as well as annoying characters. Sonic Unleashed's Chip comes to mind. Sadly, no truly great games will be released on account of the 'casual gamer', pestilence of the gaming world.

  42. Someguy5031 on May 8th, 2009 12:24 am

If you own a DS play, Sonic Rush. Its in the bargain bin and it brings the same feeling as the classics. No gimmicks!

  43. Angel.9 Rakou Cobra on May 8th, 2009 12:29 am

I'm sad I invested in a Wii, myself. Worse than that, though, is I couldn't get a preorder for one and -insisted- on having it at launch. So I had to sit outside a Walmart in the cold on the sidewalk for 13 or so hours (and that's not exaggerated) just to have Nintendo tell me they're going to try pushing into the casual market now.
I'd love to ask Nintendo, "And just how many casual gamers did you see in that line with me…?"

  44. KidWithTheFace on May 8th, 2009 12:34 am

Hey, no problem Shawn. Happy to help point out the cycle of saddness. Gladly I'm not part of it, but I still know a decent Sonic game when I play it, i.e. Sonic Unleashed. No amount of mediocre werehog action can take away from the awesome SPEED of the SPEED levels. n_n

Yeah, new Wario Land, Smash Bros., and Punch-Out!! games definitely ignore those hardcore gamers who've been with Ninty from the start.
Also, 2 new Mario platformers, 3 new Zelda games, and a few others.
And that Virtual Console crap? That's the very definition of "casual gaming"!

  57. TehVortex on May 7th, 2009 11:22 pm

Ever since Sonic Heroes and the ugly beast that was Shadow the Hedgehog this is a sad reality. I won't give up hopes on the gutsy blue speed demon though.

Personally, I thought Sonic Unleashed was a fantastic game was simply stunning visuals, extraordinary gameplay (bar the night levels), and a magnificent music score. All points which most reviews did not pick up on, which fuels a deep-seated distrust I have with Sonic game reviews. Sonic Unleashed was most deffinately a positive incline on the largely negative line graph, that is his game repertoire since the early/mid 90s.

Also I think lots of people forget about Sonic Rush on the NDS. That game was marvellous, and quite the challenge too. What Sega need to do, and I feel I'm repeating what most of the gaming universe is saying, is going back to the roots and staying there. 2D, side-on, running-through-really-huge-loop-de-looping action. No exploring through three dimensions -- that just creates strange blue tornados and bizarre homing attacks that throw you off the edge of the stage every once in a while. While running along a set track kinda worked in Sonic and the Secret Rings and (with improved controls) worked better in Sonic and the Black Knight, sticking to the 2D plane is deffinately a safe bet.

  58. That One Guy on May 8th, 2009 3:23 am

Unleashed (for the Wii) wasn't that bad, because they stuck to just running and jumping. I've seen people play the XBox one, and that had way too much crap instead of sticking to what Sonic stands for. I miss Old Sonic Team. You know, the PSO, Sonic 1-3/Knuckles Sonic Team. Sega could take a hint from Nintendo and WAIT to put out a franchise game until it is done and decent. That way, fans will love it and froth at the mouth for it and casual gamers will still be interested in checking it out.

  59. MrRaccoon on May 8th, 2009 3:35 am

    NO WAY! D=
When? When? God, that can't be true
Well, is not like Rare stopped working with Nintendo, right?

  60. Mechafox on May 8th, 2009 3:41 am

I stopped pulling after Shadow the Hedgehog.

  61. IamLightning on May 8th, 2009 4:30 am

Ganon/Ganondorf from The Legend of Zelda series was brought back many, many times. And no one really complained about that.

  62. Banette on May 8th, 2009 4:33 am

As much as I hate to say it (I grew up with the old Genesis Sonic games), this is painfully true. For me, the last "good" Sonic game was SA2: Battle on the GameCube. I didn't even want to TOUCH the newer ones.

;_; Oh Sega, why do you hate us so? Can't you listen to us just once?

  63. killercartoons on May 8th, 2009 5:03 am

In the world of comments, you just wrote a book. Anyways, well written, but I have to say, when it comes to if a game is good or not, music and visual are meaningless if the gameplay isn't good. I haven't played the game, so I can't judge that myself. All I'm saying is that game developers need to focus on their gameplay and not the shininess of their game.

  64. Andrew on May 8th, 2009 5:45 am

Sad to see how most of Sonic's games have turned out.
They need to get out of the 3D platformer genre, It's really not working out…
They need to 'reboot' it, kinda like the New Super Mario Bros. I think it'd really work for them.

And I was just playing Sonic 2 on a Sega Genesis in first period in school today!
Where the Genesis came from, I don't know…

  67. Corenator on May 8th, 2009 2:33 pm

I judge games based on two factors: fun factor, and replayability. Therefore, while there have been a few Sonic games that rued the day they toyed with me (rest in pieces, Shadow the Hedgehog), I find the majority of them to be really fun to play.

Sonic and the Black Knight, for example, was judged by IGN based on how it compares to older Sonic games, resulting in a score of 3.9/10. Last time I checked, that's even lower than Shadow the Hedgehog. Therefore, I believe IGN has mustard gas for brains, because SatBK was designed to give a new type of experience with Sonic, not bring him back to his roots.

  68. Magmafire on May 8th, 2009 2:35 pm

I thought it be cool if they just remade Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 in 2.5D just to keep us old sonic fans happy, i think the idea of Sonic Unleashed during the day was a great breath of fresh air. All my mates hate sonic the hedgehog games but soon they will get back to the top…..or not :S

  69. Magmafire on May 8th, 2009 2:37 pm

Also im a little confused, when i post a comment why is it randomly placed in the comments, and not last? is it just my pc or am i being stupid?

  70. Magmafire on May 8th, 2009 2:48 pm

I must say i don't trust IGN no more they rate games so low, but when i play them there soo fun :D

  71. chocolodocus on May 8th, 2009 3:16 pm

i would play a game with stick figures if the gameplay could parallel every mainstream game, then destroy it.
as for music i guess i could care more when im not playing the game.
Sonic Rush i actually liked it, i couldn't care less whether or not sonic and the bosses were 3D but apparently fanboys want me to. the gameplay was the retro side-scroll everyone liked with a few 3D effects which i thought was alright.
but apparently Sega doesnt really give a sh** about what we think which is why they keep making terrible sonic genre's.

  72. chocolodocus on May 8th, 2009 3:19 pm

to me the wii is like a small yapping dog-
good with children but annoying to the parents.

  73. chocolodocus on May 8th, 2009 3:24 pm

IGN likes to think their better than anyone else because they have the flashiest site. and apparently the reviewers either dont like anything made after 1998 or jerks off to anything that features SPACE MARINES IN SPACE!
what ever happened to the health bar? what was wrong with it in the first place?

  74. chocolodocus on May 8th, 2009 3:26 pm

heres a quick summary:quit comparing new to the old! its old for a reason!

  75. chocolodocus on May 8th, 2009 3:32 pm

its ironic how the fanboys hate whatever sonic games new and be so cynical as to buy it just to prove how shit it is!

  76. chocolodocus on May 8th, 2009 3:40 pm

they dont want to listen to you because you dont make the games.
i think of it as they built sonic out of lego's and made it pretty cool, then added on to it and made the lego figurine even more exciting.
finally they accidentally broke it,lost some of the pieces to it and haphazardly stuck spare pieces on to make it look ok. its still the same lego sonic figurine you started with and enjoyed for years but its no longer the original toy you loved so much.

lmao I'm so sorry I ranted yesterday. I just think the Wii had so much potential to make engaging games using motion control, yet so few pulled it off correctly. I'm more sad than angry, really. It's horrible watching such an incredible idea go to waste. And for the records, I still adore Nintendo.

I'm not really much of a Sonic fan, but I surprisingly enjoyed Sonic Rush.

Then I played Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and frankly, it's like SEGA took one step forward and took 2 back.

    Anyways, 5/5.

Sooo… I guess I'm the only one who liked Shadow the Hedgehog? Guess I need to play the others to see the difference…

  81. Sinister Minister on May 9th, 2009 7:43 pm

Because it takes SOOOOO LONG, right? Oh wait, it's taken me a measley 20 seconds to read through most of them. Stop being lazy.

  82. Sinister Minister on May 9th, 2009 7:45 pm

    Bioware made Sonic Chronicles.

Makes me want to listen to the Nine Inch Nails album…

  84. Cheat2Win on May 9th, 2009 8:24 pm

    Sad and disgusting, but true.

There's more Rule 34 of Sonic than there is for Neopets.

Nah, it's just that Sonic fans will never ever be fucking pleased. Same with some nintendo fanboys, I bet 50$ that at least 1,000 different people will have a complaint with the HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes, pretty much most of them being from content un-added. Sonic games are never always good, but I thought Sonic Riders (the first one mind you, haven't played the second) and Sonic Unleashed were pretty cool, and Sonic series isn't dead yet, but it's own fanbase can kill it.

  87. Zink120 on May 10th, 2009 4:50 pm

I second this. I bought Unleashed just the other day, and I'm REALLY enjoying it. It got a pretty poor score. Averaging around 58% if my memory serves. I don't know why…
Then again, I am playing the night-time segments as little as possible.

    To bad the sequel was.

  90. Ryan on May 13th, 2009 4:14 am

Shadow the Hedgehog could have been done beautifully if the story was more streamlined and the gameplay was a thousand times better and the objectives didn't suck shit. Even the guns. Especially the guns.

Today (9/9/09) Sega announced another 'retro 2D' Sonic title. Thought of this.

  94. Gamegeneral on September 20th, 2009 4:27 am

Riders was a decent racing game in its own right.

    Sonic Team: "Umad, Sonic Cycle?"

While their 2D games are easily the favored, I still love my Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast. If they made more like that, with the characters they had in there, then the Sonic franchise could return. Eff the Shadow the Hedgehog game hardcore. |:<

    They ruined me. ;w;

    The math DOES work perfectly…
if sonic is set equal to zero.
