Depends at what point in the series. Prior to Metroid II, they're plentiful as hell and, even afterwards, the Galactic Federation was cloning them. Samus has Metroid DNA in her after Metroid Fusion so she could've even cloned one off of herself.

On the plus side, I've been reading a book. YES. A BOOK. Eragon at the moment. I'm liking it and I just beat the campaign of Black Ops II. I didn't get the "Perfect Ending" but I got the second best one. I can live with that. It was actually a fun game to play too in terms of the storyline and choices you make. Well, I'm off. Well, Black & White have been released in March 2011 in North America, so with the worldwide launch of X & Y in October 2013, the fifth generation will have lasted at least two and a half years, whereas Pokémon Gold & Silver were released a little over two years after Red & Blue in North America. NUMBERS!
To be fair, two years might be enough to learn about 99 new pokémon, but two-and-a-half might not be enough for 156 new ones, especially after the 493 previous pocket monsters.
