If you're invincible when you pass the flagpole in the original SMB1, the regular level music plays instead of the fanfare. I know, I've done it. This video is NOT 100% ACCURATE TO THE GAME AAAARGH.
I can the see the gimmick with the 3D now, I mean it wasn't in 3D but I was a little surprised about that tiny pit over the stack of blocks, it was actually thrilling and I can imagining doing that with an actual gap, may seem a bit out of reach but from sideways it seems just silly.

Unless you are referring the single CoD-esque Rank, I could agree. However, the 'awards' such as 'ACID TRIP' and 'QUA-A-A-AD' are references to Bulletstorm's skillshot system, or perhaps another FPS that used a similar system.

But for every blessing comes a curse. If the Goombas were seen sideways a flat line, so would EVERYTHING ELSE. The mushrooms, the blocks, the pipes, THE GROUND. EVEN SPACE. Your sight would not be devolved enough to see in a single dimension, and thus, Mario would die with you behind the wheel.
Besides, if you couldn't see the Goombas, you couldn't see the clouds with faces on them! They make Mario Bros. better than cardgames!

funfact: the game designers did not program mario to actually go inside the castle. he actually never stops walking. standing in the doorway turns him invisible while the square imediatly the the right of the door is completely solid.
this can be proven by either jumping the flagpole in 3-3 or by activating a walk through walls game genie code.
