The origin of the Video Game Rocks pictures is 4chan. /v/, specifically, from before it became permanent summer. The project was the product of two threads in March of 2006.

At last count in the final thread, 36 games were represented.

On a side note, yesterday I just realized that my favorite character in Soul Calibur is voiced by Wendee Lee (the voice of Haruhi).
